Why iPhone HEIC photos do not open on Windows and how to fix it
You took an amazing photo with your iPhone, transferred it to your Windows PC, and… it will not open. The file extension is .HEIC and Windows says it cannot display it. This is not a bug, it is a technical decision by Apple that affects millions of users.
Apple introduced the HEIC format (High Efficiency Image Container) with iOS 11 to save storage space. A HEIC photo takes up roughly half the space of a JPG photo at the same quality. It is an excellent format for your iPhone, but it is not natively compatible with Windows, Android, or many web platforms.
The HEIC format is based on HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), a codec that Windows does not include by default. Although you can install paid extensions from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC files, the most practical and universal solution is to convert your HEIC photos to JPG or PNG.
Converting HEIC to JPG is simple and fast. With our free tool you can upload your HEIC photos and download them as JPG at quality 92, which keeps sharpness virtually identical to the original. The process is completely online, you do not need to install anything, and your photos are deleted immediately after conversion.
If you need to preserve transparency or work with layers, we recommend converting to PNG. The file will be larger than JPG, but it will retain all image information without any loss.
To avoid this problem in the future, you can configure your iPhone to shoot in "Most Compatible" (JPG instead of HEIC). Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select "Most Compatible". This way your photos will be saved as JPG directly.
